Our grammar worksheets can help your students learn one of the most essential skills they’ll need throughout their entire life. It helps them become more adept communicators and listeners, and helps them draw context out of words and longer texts. Grammar is a skill that your child will use their entire life, from writing throughout school as well as after. With our range of grammar worksheets, you can make sure your child covers the fundamentals and more advanced techniques as either a homeschooling resource or additional activities outside of school. A great understanding of grammar can improve the verbal reasoning of your child as they develop, helping them express their thoughts better in exams, in conversation, and any other situation.

Learn about grammar worksheets

Grammar is an essential component of adequate literacy, and it’s essential for children to learn its principles. With a good understanding of grammar and being able to apply it, your child’s sentence structure should make more sense, they’ll be able to express themselves more eloquently, and it should help them to format their writing in a manner that makes sense. This can seem difficult at first, but just like any other skill, grammar can be learned, internalised, and applied if practiced well, especially if learnt with a range of English grammar worksheets and test papers. Our grammar worksheets and other resources are aligned with the National Curriculum, and we’re proud to offer a range of worksheets to help children practice and understand grammar, all the way up to Key Stage 3. Our English worksheets are a useful supplementary resource to help children of all ages thrive in their work.

Our year 2 grammar worksheets focus on understanding grammar, identifying adjectives, sorting tenses and learning what verbs are. These provide the baseline resource for children to begin understanding the prioritisation of grammar, and how that develops throughout the years. Our year 3 grammar worksheets help introduce nouns and pronouns, what tense they’re used in, and how grammar forms to refer to people and places. Our worksheets provide various resources to ensure they understand these more advanced techniques.

Slightly more complex grammatical rules involve adjectives and adverbs, which is why their placement in sentences is a key component of learning how to describe. This is where written sentences become pointed and specific, and enable children to express themselves more readily. We’ve dedicated our year 4 grammar worksheets to showcasing auxiliary verbs, how questions, orders and statements are formatted, and how active, interrogative and imperative sentences are structured. This provides your child with a literary base to begin to move onto more advanced topics.

To help prepare for Key Stage 3, terminology that teaches both the subjective and objective forms allows for a precise reference point for describing a range of internal and external happenings, introduced by our year 5 grammar worksheets and going into our year 6 grammar worksheets.

Key Stage 3 starts with our year 7 grammar worksheets, when the study of written texts often begins. Teachers often use this time to revise core concepts and to see how authors are using grammatical devices to convey theme, setting and story. Grammar worksheets and other revision activities can help to solidify that knowledge. Your child should understand how different atoms, elements and compounds can be brought together as mixtures, and the principle of dissolving one chemical into another. They’ll also gain a strong understanding of the different states of matter and utilise words such as viscosity to describe liquids. They’ll also learn how rocks are formed, and the different chemical processes involved in forming igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks.

Our year 8 grammar worksheets can be used to solidify knowledge learnt in previous years, including proper use of spelling, using correct grammatical devices and structuring sentences correctly. Your child’s continuing understanding of grammar is consolidated throughout this period. Our year 9 grammar worksheets are the final step before GCSE work, so it’s used to teach children how to use superlative or comparative adjectives properly, as well as revising the advanced forms of topics learnt in previous years. This helps to cap off a good base ready for advanced text study and any other assignments your child gets given!

With our excellent key-stage specific grammar worksheets, it’s common for children to internalise lessons more than just using their school work. In this sense, grammar becomes less of a technical understanding and more of an actual tool they use and will use in all literate contexts from here on out!
