When diagrams are drawn in science, symbols are standardised, so everyone knows what the symbols mean and what the diagram is showing.

When circuits are drawn, there are different symbols used to represent different components.

 

Here is a picture of a simple circuit with a battery, a switch and a buzzer.

Here is the scientific diagram of the same thing using standard symbols.

Do you notice the symbol for the battery?

Do you notice the symbol for the switch?

Do you notice the symbol for the buzzer?

And look at the wires, they are drawn in a rectangle shape.

 

In this activity, we will see different symbols and will need to work out what each one is for.
