EdPlace National Tutoring Programme (NTP) assessments

At EdPlace, we’ve supported 3 of the 33 NTP 1.0 suppliers with student assessments, helping to identify initial student needs, track progress and measure the impact of tutoring. To date over 10,000 NTP students have completed our assessments, with many more scheduled. This article gives an overview of how we support the National Tutoring Programme (NTP) and answers some common FAQs.

Why do EdPlace provide assessments for the NTP?

We’re on a mission to provide parents with the best at-home learning support and are targeting to reach over 2 million students by 2022 (we’ve reached over 100k to date). We do this by offering parents direct access to our personalised content through our mobile and web app and via our tuition partners. We're passionate about playing our part in supporting tuition to remain personalised while also becoming more accessible, measurable and securely rooted to the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our assessment product is uniquely placed to help fulfil the assessment criteria of the NTP at scale and showcase how targeted content, data and tuition can raise student confidence and attainment.

What are EdPlace's dynamic assessments?

EdPlace’s dynamic assessments are an impartial benchmarking tool created by UK qualified teachers with a minimum of 5 years classroom experience. They cover all key objectives in the National Curriculum and can be completed multiple times as the skills tested remain the same, but the actual questions presented to students change on every sitting. They are automatically marked, providing immediate feedback for students, teachers and tutors.

What data do EdPlace assessments provide?

Each assessment provides anonymised student data on:

  • Overall raw score and percentage;

  • The time taken to complete (assessments are timed but don’t time out);

  • The raw score and percentage achieved in each National Curriculum topic area.

What are the benefits of using EdPlace assessments as part of the NTP?

Our assessment product is uniquely placed to help fulfill the assessments criteria of the NTP on a large scale. They can be easily used to benchmark, identify initial student needs, track progress and measure the impact of tutoring. Our dynamic technology means they can be assigned and sat multiple times as a student will never see the same questions in the same order, twice. We've built this functionality to help facilitate the delivery of the NTP and provide our partners with a simple way to measure and prove students progress throughout the programme.

How are EdPlace's assessments currently used as part of the NTP?

Each NTP partner has subtle differences in their needs, however our current partners broadly follow these steps:

  1. School enrols with one of our partners to deliver NTP support;
  2. An anonymised API link is created which is personalised and secure for each student to access their assessment;
  3. The link takes the student direct (without the need to login) to the assessment introduction page;
  4. The student completes the diagnostic assessment(s) independently (with the built in SEND accessibility toolbar turned on if appropriate);
  5. On completion, the data is securely recorded and sent back via the API;
  6. The tutor uses the data to create a personalised learning plan and inform  the level of support required;
  7. During the tuition session the tutor has the option to review the answered questions (API endpoint coming soon)
  8. At the end of the tuition block, the student sits the same diagnostic assessment to measure the progress made during the programme.

What technical integration options are available?

To deliver at scale, we recommend integrating your CRM with our API so you can assign and retrieve completed assessments directly from your system. In the EdPlace tutor account, we also support secure URLs, which means that you can create assessment links for each student to access securely via the unique link (without having to login). See this quick demo video for further detail.

Each integration is different and we’re happy to discuss how we can fit assessments into your operations in the most efficient way. Simply contact us to discuss your needs.

How do you recommend students sit the assessments?

The assessments are relatively short in length, taking on average 15- 20 minutes to complete.  We would recommend students complete the assessments independently and in one go to gain the most accurate picture of their understanding.  However, should a student be unable to complete an assessment in one sitting, the work will be saved and the link will allow the student to pick up from where they left off.

Do you cater for SEND students?

Yes. Our assessments have an optional SEND accessibility toolbar, allowing students to work independently regardless of age or reading ability. Our toolbar provides students with customisable options such as: background colour, font type and colour, read-aloud, and a language translator.

How do I access these assessments?

Depending on the requirement, we charge a per student fee and a technical integration fee. Get in contact with us to discuss your needs.
